Pack for a cold winter.
Late January sits around freezing. Expect grey foggy days, some snow, and roughly nine hours of daylight. The upside: the city is quiet, the museums are empty, and hot drinks feel even better.

Cold days mean indoor plans.
With sunlight gone by 17:00, the smart move is to stack the cosy stuff (castles, galleries and a hot pool) and keep the outdoor bits short and scenic.
Ride the funicular up to a thousand-year-old hilltop fortress. Indoor exhibitions, the Museum of Puppetry, the Watchtower panorama over a foggy city, and a wine bar to thaw out in.
National Gallery, Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum and the City Museum, all a short walk apart, all with indoor heating.
The open-air rink under the trees usually runs into late winter. Skate hire on-site; check it's still open the week you visit.

Slovenia is small enough to see a lot in a day. All four of these are an easy out-and-back from Ljubljana: caves are the safe bet in bad weather, the lakes are beautiful with snow. Extend the start or end of your SFC trip.
The postcard: an island church on a glacial lake under snow-dusted Alps. Walk the shore, ride a pletna boat if the water's open, and order the famous Bled cream cake.
A constant 10°C inside, the perfect cold-day plan. Ride the electric train deep into 24 km of karst caverns and meet the “baby dragon” olms.

Slovenia uses the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; carry a little cash for the Dealers' Den and small cafés.
Not obligatory. Round up the bill or leave ~10% for good table service.

Look for “Lekarna”. Lekarna Ljubljana runs a 24-hour pharmacy near the centre for anything urgent.
EU roaming works at home rates for EU visitors. Otherwise grab a prepaid SIM/eSIM (A1, Telekom, Telemach).
Ljubljana is very safe with low crime. Emergency 112, police 113. English is widely spoken downtown.
